Study says AIDS came to U.S. in

    Last Updated: October 30, 2007 11:33

HEALTH. The AIDS virus migrated to the U.S. from Haiti in about 1969, after traveling from Africa, and circulated for a dozen years before being detected, researchers said. It was probably carried by a Haitian immigrant.

The findings were based on a genetic analysis of blood samples taken in the early 1980s from Haitians who had recently come to Miami and were among the first people diagnosed with AIDS.

Researchers compared the samples to more than 100 others from different countries, said the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences study.
