Amazon.com launches developer contest
NEW YORK. Amazon.com Inc., the world’s biggest Internet retailer, started a contest for entrepreneurs and software developers to lure customers to its Web services unit.
Contestants may win as much as $100,000 in cash and service credits on Amazon Web Services LLC if they provide the winning business venture, the Seattle-based company said yesterday in a statement.
Amazon.com is building its Web services to increase sales beyond media products such as books and DVDs, and general merchandise like jewelry and electronics. The division offers users the ability to tap into the company’s technology infrastructure and rent storage space or computing power rather than having to purchase the hardware themselves.
The retailer, with $10.7 billion in revenue in 2006, doesn’t provide specific financial results for the unit, Amazon.com spokeswoman Heather Huntoon said yesterday.
