Poll: Iraq War a mistake

Washington. A majority of Americans say the U.S. made a mistake going to war in Iraq and 45 percent say the increase in the number of troops there this year isn’t helping, a New York Times/CBS News poll shows.
Still, the poll found some growth in support for President George W. Bush’s decision to deploy about 30,000 more soldiers and Marines, with 35 percent of the public saying the reinforcements have made the situation better, compared with 29 percent who said the same thing in a May survey, the Times reported. Sixty-two percent said the U.S. made a mistake getting involved in Iraq, the poll found.
In March 2003, just after the war began, 24 percent of Americans said U.S. involvement was a mistake, and 70 percent said it wasn’t a mistake. Gen. David Petraeus, the top military commander in Iraq, is set to testify today in the U.S. House on progress in reducing violence there.
The Bush administration releases a progress report this week that likely will argue for more time to let his strategy to take hold. Military families are more positive about the effect of the extra troops on the conflict, with 44 percent saying it made the situation in Iraq better.
The poll also found that seven in 10 Americans think the Iraqi government is not doing enough to help bring about stability.
